Homemade Salt Crackers & Salt Cookies

  • Prep Time: 20 mins
  • Resting Time: 30 mins
  • Baking Time: 15 mins
  • Total Time: 1 hr 5 mins

Ingredients:

For the Dough

  • 100 ml lukewarm water
  • 5 g dry yeast (about 1 teaspoon)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 250 g flour (about 2 cups)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1–2 tablespoons poppy seeds (optional, for flavor and texture)
  • 50–70 g cheese, grated (cheddar, parmesan, or any firm cheese)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

  1. In a small bowl, combine the lukewarm water, dry yeast, and sugar.
  2. Stir gently and let the mixture sit for 5–10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy. This ensures the yeast is activated.

Step 2: Prepare the Dough

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add the grated cheese and poppy seeds (if using) to the flour mixture, and mix well.
  3. Pour the activated yeast mixture and vegetable oil into the dry ingredients.
  4. Mix until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour (1 tablespoon at a time).

Step 3: Knead the Dough

  1. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5–7 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  2. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rest for 30 minutes to allow the yeast to activate further.

Step 4: Roll Out the Dough

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Divide the dough into smaller portions for easier handling.
  3. Roll out each portion on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness (the thinner, the crispier the crackers).

Step 5: Cut and Shape the Crackers

  1. Use a cookie cutter, a round lid, or a knife to cut the dough into desired shapes (round, square, or rectangle).
  2. Place the cut dough pieces onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  3. Use a fork to poke small holes into each cracker to prevent puffing during baking.

Step 6: Bake the Crackers

  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 12–15 minutes, or until the crackers turn golden brown and crispy.
  2. Remove the crackers from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack.

Optional Toppings:

Extra Cheese

Sprinkle grated cheese over the crackers before baking for a cheesy crust.

Herbs

Add dried oregano, rosemary, or thyme for a herby flavor.

Salt Flakes

Sprinkle coarse salt on top for an extra salty kick.

Tips:

  1. Store the crackers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
  2. For longer storage, freeze the crackers in a ziplock bag and reheat in the oven for a few minutes before serving.
  3. Enjoy Your Homemade Salt Crackers & Cookies!
  4. Crispy, savory, and oh-so-satisfying, these crackers are perfect for any occasion.
  5. Pair them with dips, soups, or enjoy them as a standalone snack!
