Homemade Salt Crackers & Salt Cookies
- Prep Time: 20 mins
- Resting Time: 30 mins
- Baking Time: 15 mins
- Total Time: 1 hr 5 mins
Ingredients:
For the Dough
- 100 ml lukewarm water
- 5 g dry yeast (about 1 teaspoon)
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 250 g flour (about 2 cups)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1–2 tablespoons poppy seeds (optional, for flavor and texture)
- 50–70 g cheese, grated (cheddar, parmesan, or any firm cheese)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions:
Step 1: Activate the Yeast
- In a small bowl, combine the lukewarm water, dry yeast, and sugar.
- Stir gently and let the mixture sit for 5–10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy. This ensures the yeast is activated.
Step 2: Prepare the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the grated cheese and poppy seeds (if using) to the flour mixture, and mix well.
- Pour the activated yeast mixture and vegetable oil into the dry ingredients.
- Mix until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour (1 tablespoon at a time).
Step 3: Knead the Dough
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5–7 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rest for 30 minutes to allow the yeast to activate further.
Step 4: Roll Out the Dough
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Divide the dough into smaller portions for easier handling.
- Roll out each portion on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness (the thinner, the crispier the crackers).
Step 5: Cut and Shape the Crackers
- Use a cookie cutter, a round lid, or a knife to cut the dough into desired shapes (round, square, or rectangle).
- Place the cut dough pieces onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Use a fork to poke small holes into each cracker to prevent puffing during baking.
Step 6: Bake the Crackers
- Bake in the preheated oven for 12–15 minutes, or until the crackers turn golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the crackers from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack.
Optional Toppings:
Extra Cheese
Sprinkle grated cheese over the crackers before baking for a cheesy crust.
Herbs
Add dried oregano, rosemary, or thyme for a herby flavor.
Salt Flakes
Sprinkle coarse salt on top for an extra salty kick.
Tips:
- Store the crackers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
- For longer storage, freeze the crackers in a ziplock bag and reheat in the oven for a few minutes before serving.
- Enjoy Your Homemade Salt Crackers & Cookies!
- Crispy, savory, and oh-so-satisfying, these crackers are perfect for any occasion.
